Sports Portion of Summer Camp

Part of campers daily schedule will be 90 minutes of sport activity time in the MAPS gym.  The beginning of each week will be spent learning the fundamental skills and strategies for the "Sport of the Week".  As the week progresses, activity time will increase in game time and decrease in practice time.

Week 1: Pickleball (6/24-6/28)

What is Pickleball?

Basically, Pickleball is Indoor Tennis that is played with whiffle balls and hard plastic paddles.

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Serving
  • Forehand Return
  • Backhand Return

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Rally shot placement
  • Scorekeeping

Week 2: Badminton (7/1-7/5)

What is Badminton?

Badminton is a net game that involves hitting a "birdie" back and forth over the net using a racket with the purpose making it touch the ground on the opponent's side to score a point.

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Serving
  • Forehand Shot
  • Backhand Shot
  • Drive Shot
  • Lob Shot
  • Drop Shot

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Rally shot placement
  • Keeping score
  • Deceptive Shots

Week 3: Flag Football (7/8-7/12)

What is Flag Football?

Flag Football is the non-contact version of American Football where a player's flag is pulled to be considered "down" rather than tackling to the ground.


*Note: this week will focus on skill development more than game play

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Throwing
  • Catching
  • Juke Moves
  • Flag Pulling

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Route running
  • Shadow Defense (Man-to-Man)
  • Basic Formations

Week 4: Ultimate Frisbee (7/15-7/19)

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is played by passing the Frisbee down the field with the purpose of making a catch in the "endzone" for a score.  Players cannot run with possession of the Frisbee, thus the Frisbee can only be moved with passing.

  • Throwing
  • Catching

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Getting Open on Offense
  • Proper Spacing on Offense
  • Defending Space

Week 5: Soccer (7/22-7/26)

What is Soccer?

Soccer is a game that is played by kicking the ball around the field with the purpose of kicking it into the goal for a point.

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Dribbling
  • Passing
  • Shooting
  • Stealing the ball
  • Body Control

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Proper Spacing on Offense
  • Off-ball Movement to "Get Open"
  • Defending Space
  • Team Passing Strategies

Week 6: Lacrosse (7/29-8/2)

What is Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is a game that is played by passing and shooting a ball using a long-handled stick with a net attached to the top end.  


*Note:  we will be playing a non-contact, flag-pulling version

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Passing
  • Catching
  • Shooting
  • Scooping
  • Juke Moves
  • Flag Pulling

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Proper Spacing

Week 7: Floor Hockey (8/5-8/9)

What is Floor Hockey?

Floor Hockey is a game that is played using a long-handled stick with a curved blade at the end that is used to push the ball around the floor, pass, shoot, and play defense.

What skills will campers be introduced to?

  • Dribbling
  • Passing & Receiving
  • Shooting
  • Poke Checking

What strategies will campers be introduced to?

  • Proper Spacing
  • One-Timers
  • Defending Space
